Stephen Tate is a British artist who lives with his wife and two Labradors near the Roman city of Bath. After leaving school in the 1980's Stephen studied as an apprentice at a mechanical engineering company, later he moved into graphics and worked as the designer in the studio of a sign etching company for over 25 years. He now runs his own sign company SPT Design designing and manufacturing chemically etched and engraved signs and designs, in the pasthe has also used this medium to create a variety of artworks in metal..
Stephen has always had a passion for drawing and painting since an early age and after a long break from the easel Stephen returned to the canvas a few years ago. He paints and draws in a variety of media which includes watercolour, graphite, acrylic and line & wash and has recently started exploring painting in oils.
He takes his inspiration from the natural world around him both in the UK and further afield. He enjoys painting African wildlife and has been on several self drive safaris in South Africa and explored Namibia by 4x4 with his wife Nicki, and now has an extensive photographic collection of African landscapes and wildlife to draw from.
Stephen is a self taught artist who has had no formal teaching but has studied watercolour painting, life drawing, picture framing, silk screen printing and print making at Wiltshire evening colleges. He has been a member of the Bathampton art group since 2017 and was the winner of their autumn project 2017 song title with his submission 'Moon river'.
